Full-Time Captain

The Gilpin Ambulance Authority (GAA) is recruiting a high-caliber Captain to lead field operations in the mountain community of Gilpin County, CO. This leadership role is designed for a seasoned paramedic ready to blend clinical expertise with supervisory oversight in a mountain community with a rural and urban feel to the environment. Gilpin County encompasses the City of Central and the City of Black Hawk, combined, both are home to the one of the largest concentration of casinos in the State of Colorado. Gilpin County is also home to the Golden Gate State Park as well as many other recreational venues.

  • Operational  Leadership: Supervise shift personnel and ensure compliance with clinical and operational protocols. Participate in unified command on complex      incidents. Serve as the example for “doing the right thing” for our crews.
  • Administrative      Oversight: Manage daily shift logs, vehicle readiness, and coordinate interagency requests with fire and hospital partners.
  • Functional      Assignments: Each shift Captain is assigned a functional assignment at the discretion of the Chief or Deputy Chief. Functional assignments include      QA/QI, Training and Education and Logistics.

    • PALS or PEPP,
    • ICS 300/400
    • PHTLS
    • Colorado Primary Instructor
    • AHA Instructor for BLS, ACLS and PALS.
  • Experience: Proven clinical excellence; previous supervisory or FTO experience with a successful track record is highly preferred.
  • Skills: Strong conflict resolution, critical thinking, and the ability to maintain professional standards under pressure.

Compensation & Exceptional Benefits

  • Salary Range: $90,842.90 – $113,389.12 annually.
  • Premium Healthcare: GAA pays 100% of the employee’s premium for medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Family Coverage: GAA covers 70% of family premiums.
  • Financial Security: Includes a $1,200 annual HRA, $50,000 term life insurance, and generous retirement options.
  • Equipment: Work with a modern fleet of  ambulances and new equipment throughout the organization

Our Culture: Professionalism with a Peak Perspective

At GAA, we don’t just run calls; we serve as the clinical backbone of a high-altitu1de community. Our culture is built on three pillars:

  • Autonomy with Support: We trust our Captains to make high-stakes decisions in the field. You aren't just a supervisor; you are a mentor who has the      resources and modern equipment to do the job right.
  • The "Small-Team" Advantage: We move fast and avoid the red tape of larger urban agencies. Here, your voice directly influences operational changes, and you’ll work closely with a Chief and Deputy Chief who values transparency and professional growth.
  • Mountain Resilience: Our team thrives on the unique challenges of Gilpin County and the surrounding areas. We look for leaders who bring a calm, "steady-hand" approach to complex scenes and who prioritize the physical and mental well-being of their crew.

The Role: Leader, Mentor, Liaison

At the Gilpin Ambulance Authority, you aren't operating in a silo. As Captain, you are the face of GAA on the front lines, serving as the critical bridge between our agency and the partners who keep this county safe.

  • Unified Command Leadership: You will work side-by-side with Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office deputies, the Black Hawk Police Department and local fire crews from Black Hawk, Central City, and Timberline Fire Protection District. Your ability to maintain seamless communication and mutual respect on-scene is what ensures successful outcomes in our complex terrain.
  • A "One-Team" Philosophy: We pride ourselves on a culture where the badge on the shoulder matters less than the mission at hand. You will be expected to foster a collaborative environment where EMS, Fire, and Law Enforcement operate as a single, cohesive unit.
  • Beyond the Call: Your leadership extends to inter-agency training and disaster planning. You won't just respond to incidents; you’ll help design the joint protocols that make our entire county’s emergency response more effective.
  • Community Trust: In our tight-knit mountain district, you are more than a supervisor—you are a trusted community leader. We look for Captains who lead with the professional diplomacy required to represent GAA.

Is This Your Next Step?

We are looking for a Captain who is as passionate about developing people as they are about clinical excellence. If you lead by example and want to help shape the future of a progressive rural EMS agency, we want to hear from you.
